About
Our Credit Union was organized on January 8, 1946. We are one of the oldest still operating Credit
Unions in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our Credit Union is located in Chatham Michigan. This
area is in the central part of the Upper Peninsula. The population of our town and immediate
surrounding township is approximately 2000 people.
The Northern Lights Community FCU (Formerly Chatham Eben Coop FCU) was organized in the same way the
Chatham Cooperative Grocery Store was organized. It was a way for this small rural community to join
forces and pool the monies in such away that enabled the members to be able to save and borrow at a
low interest rate. This was at a time when borrowing from banks was very difficult to do. The first
Credit Union office was located inside the Chatham Cooperative Grocery Store. The Credit Union
operated out of a back room in the Grocery Store for more then thirty years before moving to an
empty building just next door in 1978. In 1995 the Credit Union moved to a much more modern office
building a couple of blocks away. That building served its purpose until 2003 when a brand new
Credit Union was built on the only corner lot in town.
Our Mission Statement:
The mission of the Northern Lights Community FCU is to focus on serving the financial needs of our

Our Vision Statement:
The vision of the Northern Lights Community FCU is to be the primary financial institution for our
members and bring credit union services to more people.
